HSDPA+ coverage exaggerated

HSDPA+ coverage exaggerated

T-Mobile coverage in Jacksonville Florida is being promoted by the company as covering almost all of Duval county in hsdpa+ coverage. I tested in several locations on the south side of town on both my Android G1 and my Merlin XU870 PCI Express card. I found that the best I could get was 760Kbps down and 520Kbps up.

For those that don’t know. HSDPA+ coverage is supposed to include speeds up to 21Mbps. HSDPA is 7.2Mbps. And 3G is 384Kbps outdoor and 2Mbps indoor.

The normal range for 3G is anywhere from 50Kbps to 1.5Mbps. HSDPA Should get 4-6Mbps and HSDPA+ Should get 8-15Mbps.

I am very disappointed in the false marketing put forth by T-Mobile. I would have expected a perceived an improvement when it was released. As it stands I found out about it by seeing a tweet about some other cities. And then checking the carriers site.

The data coverage map for jacksonville as of 8-5-2010

The colors are labeled on the T-Mobile site as darkest to lightest:

  • Very Fast Mobile Web
  • Fast Mobile Web
  • Mobile Web
  • none

I interpret this to mean:

  • HSDPA+
  • HSDPA
  • 3G
  • Edge
